If you want me to read a book, clap your hands.
If you want me to read a book, clap your hands.
If you want me to read a book, listen up and take a look.
If you want me to read a book, clap your hands.

Book: The Mitten Tree by Candace Christiansen
Old Sarah knits mittens for all the children waiting for the school bus and puts them on the tree in her front yard. This is a longer story but the older preschoolers understood the message of kindess and seemed to enjoy the book.
Song: "The Mittens On My Hands" (Tune: "The Wheels on the Bus")
The mittens on my hands keep me warm.
Keep me warm.
Keep me warm.
The mittens on my hands keep me warm.
All winter long.
The hat on my head covers my ears...
The boots on my feet jump in the snow...

Book: Missing Mittens
As a farmers tries to find the right number of mittens for his various farmyard animals, the reader is introduced to even and odd numbers. My preschool crowd was too young for the concept of even and odd numbers but we did a lot of counting and did talk about counting by 2's.
Rhyme:
Mittens for the snow time when the world is white.
Mittens for my two hands (hold out both hands)
Mittens left and right (show left and right)
Mittens with a thumbplace (show thumb)
Mittens warm and snug
Mittens make me feel like a bug in a rug.

Flannel Board Story: The Three Little KittensI knew this nursery rhyme but a quick google search will give you the words.
Book: Penguin in Love by Salina Yoon
One day Penguin goes looking for love and finds a mitten instead. The mittens owner takes Penguin on an adventure to find his own true love. I had given the kids a choice between this and The Mitten since I was sure they had all seen Jan Brett's book so many times. I'm not sure they actually got this whole story but they enjoyed it still.
Folder Story: Kitten's Mitten's
I found this as a flannel story but I changed it into a folder story by taking a manila folder and cutting a mitten shape out of it. Then I stapled all edges but one and put construction paper in the order of the story. It will make more sense when I post a picture and you read the story.

Closing Song:
Oh it's time to say goodbye to all my friends (clapclap)
It's time to say goodbye to all my friends (clapclap)
Storytime is done today (wave goodbye)
So come again another day
It's time to say goodbye to all my friends (clapclap)
